Why do I need a Revivo 2 Desiccator and Sanitizer?

Custom earphones and hearing aids are made to fit the shape of your ear canal. They fit perfectly with your ear canal, blocking out outside sounds and allowing you to hear pure music or clear speech without interference. However, a closed ear canal creates a warm, humid environment where bacteria can easily grow. As a result, the skin of the ear canal can easily become infected, causing rashes or inflammation. Moreover, a closed ear canal will also cause the moisture in the ear canal to be trapped in the custom earphones or hearing aids and even condense into liquid water. Such accumulation in the balanced armature speakers causes the product to malfunction or fail over time. Therefore, they should be dried, sterilized, disinfected, and cleaned after use.

The most common cause of failure in high-end custom earphones and hearing aids devices
High-end custom earphones and hearing aids use miniature speakers called "balanced armature drivers," often called "BA drivers." A typical BA driver consists of a sealed metal box and ~1 mm diameter sound output tube (see the attached picture). BA drivers can produce high output and low distortion audio; therefore, they are often chosen for high-end earphones and hearing aids production.

How does liquid water get inside the sealed BA drivers?

The BA drivers must work in a sealed ear canal to produce perfect sound quality. Unfortunately, a closed ear canal also means hot, humid air. BA drivers are usually mounted deep in the earphone's housing, and their metal case is not in direct contact with hot, moist air, so the temperature of the metal case is lower. When the hot and humid air enters the BA drivers through the sound transmission tube and contacts the cold metal casing, it condenses and forms a thin layer of liquid water on the metal surface.

In addition, if the wearer's sweat seeps into the ear canal, then the humidity concentration inside the ear canal will also increase, and the amount of liquid water condenses.

How to remove liquid water and moisture from the BA drivers?
The liquid water in the BA driver must first evaporate into moisture before being removed. Although liquid water evaporates at room temperature, the evaporation rate is very low. 

Water evaporation will increase if we quickly move the moisture out of the BA driver. Suppose we can make the air outside the earphones much drier than the air inside the BA drivers. With a big humidity difference, the BA driver's moisture will diffuse to the outside. And it will continue to diffuse until the humidity levels are equal on both sides. Therefore, the diffusion effect will continue if we can continue to remove moisture from the outside air and keep it at lower humidity. The liquid water in the BA driver will continue to evaporate until it dries out. 

Can I use a home electronic desiccator to do dehumidification?
Generally speaking, expensive devices such as high-end custom earphones or hearing aids are placed in an electronic desiccator cabinet for drying and storage after use. However, the desiccator box's function is to desiccate and store, not dehumidify. Therefore, nobody will put some gear that got rained on and is still dripping wet directly into the desiccator box; people will always dry off all the water before placing it inside. The problem is that when there is water inside the BA driver, you cannot wipe it dry. And the sealed metal box of the BA driver relies on the long slender sound transmission tube to connect to the outside of the earphones. Even if there is only moisture inside the BA driver, it will be tough to discharge it, let alone liquid water？

Because we cannot heat the BA driver to increase the evaporation of liquid water, we have to rely on natural evaporation to remove the water from the earphones. The most effective way is to put the earphone alone in the electronic desiccator box. Set a low humidity level that allows the liquid water in the BA driver to evaporate quickly, which would quickly and completely dry the custom earphones.

But, even the smallest home electronic desiccator box has a capacity of more than 30 liters. Of course, no one would use such a large box for just one pair of earphones so that other items will be inside. Compared to the other things, the moisture amount in a BA driver is tiny, but it is also the most difficult to dry. Therefore, before the more considerable amount of moisture on other items is wholly reduced, we can imagine the humidity inside the BA driver barely reduced for a long time. This is why the electronic desiccator box is not suitable for this task.

How does Revivo 2 dry out the BA drivers?
Revivo 2's internal space is only about 0.3L, so it is relatively easy to control the humidity of its interior air. We use a high airflow fan to circulate the air inside. The custom earphones or hearing aid are placed on a platform next to the fan outlet. As the fan blows dry air through the unit, the moisture deep inside the moving iron unit diffuses into the dry air due to the difference in moisture concentration.

The moisture in the air stream is then absorbed by the desiccant capsule placed at the return air inlet, and the dried air flows under the platform and returns to the fan, where it blows out again. This circulating dry air will keep absorbing the moisture diffused from the earphones. The liquid water inside the BA driver will evaporate into moisture and then diffuse outward. This continuous cycle will slowly dry the device's BA driver and electronic parts.
